This site is dedicated to the advocacy of open formats and protecting the rights to information. In our view, any attempt to restrict access to information is a violation of basic human rights and disenfranchises a large number of people.

Bytesfree.org supports California Assembly Bill 1668 as well as bills in other states that, if passed, will ensure that all citizens have access to their state's digital information. Ultimately, our goal is for constitution protection of our rights and recognition that, in the 21st century, restricting access to information via proprietary digital formats is tantamount to disenfranchisement and a violation of basic human rights.
